In the Budget Speech for 1991-92, the Hon’ble Minister for Finance, Govt. of Kerala has announced to start a new Govt. Ayurveda College in Kannur District. Dr.M.Govindan, the Superintendent, Govt. Ayurveda College Hospital, Tripunithura was appointed as Special Officer for the preliminary works for starting the College. He was assumed charge on 10.05.1991. The College was started functioning in the old block of Govt. Town High School Building near SN Park in Kannur.
Dr.M.Govindan was appointed as first Principal w.e.f 15.01.1992 and the first batch of BAMS course was started on 15.01.1992 with an intake capacity of 30 students in a year. 35 acres of land was sanctioned to Govt. Ayurveda College, Kannur at Kadannappally Village and Kannur Taluk and District for the construction of buildings for College, Hospital, Hostels, Quarters etc. The functioning of the College has been shifted to the newly constructed building at Pariyaram with effect from 01.06.1998.
